  Unganisha is a duo, combining Norwegian electronic artist Bernt Isak Wærstad and Kenyan musician and vocalist Labdi Ommes. Aside from her distinctive voice, Labdi plays the orutu: a single stringed instrument which has traditionally only been played by men.
  
  2022 has seen Unganisha storming a brace of international festivals, as well as debuting their ambitious stage production ‘MAMARINA’, which integrated their music with light, text, video, scenography and costume. Heaven’s Lathe is excited to be releasing the vinyl debut from this cutting edge duo.
  
  A-side: ‘Cheza Usilie’. A kinetic feast with real dance floor appeal. Labdi’s performance is both subtle and vibrant, whilst Wærstad’s rich rhythmic electronics are warm and sensual.
  
  B-side: ‘Gondi’. Labdi’s bewitching vocal melody swims through a lattice of shuffling polyrhythms, courtesy of guest percussionist Ane Marthe Sørlien Holen. As ever, there is way more going on than initially meets the ear. Wærstad tucks all kinds of thrilling flourishes into the production.

  Unganisha is a Swahili word, meaning to unify or connect. An extremely appropriate name for an outfit whose avowed intention is to bridge east-African traditional music with western experimental sounds and electronic club grooves. The fact the results work so beautifully is a source of delight.
