Comprising Kirsty Yates and Julian Tardo, Brighton based duo Insides blend subtle and spectral soundscapes with tugging melodies and vocals that are both intimate and frank. From their debut album ‘Euphoria’, to their instrumental work ‘Clear Skin’, up to their latest album ‘Soft Bonds’, Insides have created what Wire magazine recently hailed as ‘intuitive, intriguing, enrapturing music’. Despite a lengthy career, Insides have only produced a modest body of work. Yet every release is essential. Heaven’s Lathe is thrilled to be able to present two brand new specially recorded compositions that illustrate this duo’s distinct magic.
Shade’ sees Yates’ perfectly judged vocal hovering over a lattice of subtle piano lines, with a lyric alive with memorable lines. “No ghosts will find you” and “I’m too tall to go unnoticed” in particular leap out. When a gently flickering electronic rhythm glides into view the whole thing is elevated to the sublime. Like all of Insides’ best work, it is both enigmatic and immediate.
‘Crumb Dropper’ is an ambitious and intricately structured work, which evolves through several discrete sections, encompassing the spartan yet sensual sequence of throbbing bass notes, bucolic keyboards, intervals of silence and best of all, a section where Yates’ multiple vocal lines overlap in dazzling clusters. This may just be the most intriguing compositions you’ll hear all year.
