Husband and wife team of Dave and Kerrie Hughes took the name BRRDS from a 1986 software programme that was developed to predict birds’ flight patterns. It’s an apt name for a duo who use outdated technology to create surprisingly natural forms.

Having previously released albums as members of art-rock group Formula One and kraut-poppers Domestic4, Dave and Kerrie left the city and bought a dilapidated barn in the Welsh countryside. Wherein they discovered a huge stash of family postcards dating back 100 years, and two Italian synths from the early 70s. Thus BRRDS were born.

Their debut album ‘LIM IN AL SP ACE’ was released last November, showcasing lush, evocative song forms that are hard to resist. Now, Heaven’s Lathe present a brand new single that sees BRRDS navigating their way toward a more poppy sound, rich with subtle but lustrous hooks.

A side: ‘In My Room’. “The song’s about what it’s meant to have your own space during covid,” say BRRDS. “For some, it’s been a sanctuary. Some have felt so secure they’re now afraid to meet others. Others have felt trapped. For some, having their own space is a pipe dream.” ‘In My Room’ is powered by a sleek, propulsive motorik beat, as Kerrie Hughes’s honeyed vocal soars overhead.

AA side: ‘Going Your Own Way’ opens with a bucolic flute line, before unfolding into a languid rural groove that sees the pair sharing vocal duties. There is a beauty and delicacy here, that elevates BRRDS over many of their contemporaries.

Absolutely LOVE this album. It's SO great to hear these legends energized and busting out killer track after killer track. Three albums in less than a year is a herculean feat, and that each one is brilliant, building on the energy of the one before, well... it's all worth shouting about. Dig this so much, I bought all 3 and donated them to my radio station, KDUR, so we all get to hear them over the air in Colorado. Chuffed to get to play them for others. ElmerD
