'Rough As Fuck' / 'Windows & Pinback'

by Candidate

  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

Heaven’s Lathe is thrilled to be releasing the brand new single from the UK’s finest alternative folk rock ensemble: Candidate, comprising brothers Joel and Alex Morris, and Ian Painter.

Their music blends elements of, amongst others, Big Star, Pentangle and Neil Young. Over a period of 9 years, Candidate quietly and consistently released albums of delicate beauty and bruised optimism. These recordings, along with just a handful of live appearances, have earned the band a loyal fanbase and glittering reviews.

“Masterful collection of future folk and breathtaking pastoral pop... both truly timeless and utterly of the moment.” - Rolling Stone

Having suspended operations for a number of years, the pandemic inspired Candidate to recommence music- making both in home studios and in a remote shack on the windswept Essex coast. A full album is due later in the year, but here are the first fruits of this fresh endeavour.

A side: ‘Rough As Fuck’ is a meditation on how the love of the right person can see us through tough times. A gently cycling guitar figure blossoms into an almost Monkees-ish strut. Despite the profane title, this is song of beauty and grace: Feelgood music with real emotional depth.

B side: ‘Windows & Pinback’ is a sparkling composition, with a lyric that showcases Candidate’s knack for ear-catching phrases and double-take couplets. It’s a languorous space-trucker’s sea shanty full of sideways references to 1970s blue-collar sci-fi films. Not to mention a liquid guitar break that David Roback would have been proud to call his own. This truly is music to savour.

“A superb band, one of the best in Britain.” - Stuart Maconie

“Candidate are Britain’s most tasteful, witty and thoughtful band: Album of the Week.” – Stewart Lee, The Times
