  Maria Uzor is an artist whose work merges the spirits of electro, avant-pop and techno, with African and Caribbean syncopated grooves. She is also one half of the highly acclaimed post-punk-electro-dance duo Sink Ya Teeth who have received serious praise from the likes of Pitchfork, NME etc.
  
  In 2020, Uzor began recording and releasing solo work. The material quickly revealed itself to be very special, with her songs receiving world class remixes from A Certain Ratio and The Secret DJ. With Uzor continuing to evolve her own distinctive amalgam of Afro-futurism, Heaven’s Lathe is thrilled to be releasing two new songs by this unique artist.
  
  A-side: ‘Permission’ comes riding out on a flickering bass line, with synth tones soaring skyward. Then, some nifty drum programming adds a sense of urgency, elevating the composition with its kinetic energy. Meanwhile, Uzor’s vocals are initially measured, before being briefly detuned, then becoming increasingly wild as she sings ‘I got hooked on blah blah!’
  
  B-side: ‘Winner’ (Feat: Emily Winng) With its acidic pulse and skittering hi-hat, this is a spacious piece of techno- pop that features the soulful vocals of co-writer: the enigmatic Emily Winng. Like all of Uzor’s work, it hooks you in and simply won’t let go.
  
  The cover features a striking portrait of Uzor’s mother, taken in the late 70s, whilst the singles themselves are lathe cut on transparent vinyl with engraved centres. These really are beautiful objects.
